In Avaya architecture, IP Server Interface (IPSI) boards connect the core ACM server to Port Networks via the Control Network. IPSI boards don’t like slow networks and use heartbeat messages to track the performance of the Control Network. If heartbeats are missed, it means other data is going missing between the ACM server and the Port Network too.
The VSM reports taken from a customer show the direct linkages between slow Control Networks and missed heartbeats. If heartbeats don’t arrive the IPSI knows something is wrong with the network. Miss three heartbeats in a row and the IPSI will restart, dropping everything handled by the whole port network. This can be thousands of phones and hundreds of gateways.

We then looked at the IPSI Round Trip Delay report to find that latency of the control network was the cause of this looming problem. Our engineer got straight onto it and the performance increased markedly. With the help of VSM we avoided an outage for thousands of our users.”
